Dental Care problems & Tips for Toddlers

Why Is dental care Important  ?

By kindergarten, more than 40% of kids have cavities. Dental Care should start as early as possible. Even When Your Baby has no teeth. Massage the gums twice daily for a healthy growth. Use oils like Sesame for massage & cleaning. Benefits of Sesame oil are well known & its ingestion is beneficial to child. The child should also visit a dentist before his first birthday.

When should you start brushing your kid's teeth?

As soon as they appear. Start cleaning out a baby’s mouth even before any teeth appear using a wet washcloth. Tooth decay -- although largely preventable with good care -- is one of the most common chronic diseases of children and teens ages 6 to 19.

Healthy Dental Habits :-

  • Brushing is crucial from the get-go. Even before your baby has teeth, you can gently brush her gums. Use water on a baby toothbrush, or clean them with a soft washcloth.
  • When teeth appear, brush twice daily with an infant tooth brush . Start flossing when two teeth touch each other.
  • Brush and floss just before bedtime. No food or drink, except water, until the next morning.
  •  Limit kids to fruit juice, and restrict sugary drinks and foods to meal times.
  • Limit the use of pacifiers to the age of 2yrs.
  • Antibiotics and some asthma medications can cause an overgrowth of candida (yeast), which can lead to a fungal infection called oral thrush. Signs are creamy, curd-like patches on the tongue or inside the mouth.
  • Kids can start brushing their teeth with help from a grown-up around 2 or 3. But they may not be ready to go it alone until about age 6.
  • Avoid Prolonged bottle use, especially at night, and sweetened drinks .
  • Carbohydrates in the beverages like sweetened milk, soft drinks, juices & other artificial sweetened products promote the growth of the bacteria that causes cavities. Please Avoid Junk Food & packaged foods & drinks.

Natural killer cells attack microbes and cancer producing cells.
  • Add fish or fish oil to the toddler's diet. Fish is a source of omega 3 fatty acids, which increase macrophage activity. Macrophages are white cells that eat bacteria in the body. Serve cold water fish varieties such as salmon, as these provide the greatest amount of omega 3. You can feed a toddler up to 3 3-oz. (85 g) servings per week, or you can mix the oil from 1 fish oil capsule into the toddler's food per day.
  • Serve foods containing probiotics. Probiotics are healthy bacteria found in the gut. Toddlers who eat probiotic foods like buttermilk or fresh yogurt  may have increased immunity to rotavirus and urinary tract infections.
